Official Languages Act 2003
The Official Languages Act, 2003 is intended to promote the use of Irish for official purposes in the State and sets out the duties of public bodies in relation to the official languages of the State (i.e. Irish and English). The Act places a number of significant requirements on public bodies regarding the use of the Irish language and they must ensure that the service they provide in Irish should not be of a lower standard than in English. In addition to the specific provisions of the Act, Regulations introduced under the Act (Statutory Instrument No. 391 of 2008) provide, inter alia, for the use of the Irish language only, or the Irish and English languages together, on stationery, signage of public bodies and in recorded oral announcements.
