and Neil Jackman's audiobook Unsilent Stones: conversations with the inhabitants of Athlone's Abbey Graveyard which was shortlisted for an Archaeological Achievement Award in 2021.

These will be followed by a keynote lecture by Dr Melanie Giles entitled “Thrust me deep and stake me quick” (Alan Garner, Treacle Walker): the archaeology of bogs, bog bodies and bog things.

In Alan Garner’s 2021 novel Treacle Walker, a bog body speaks, begging to return to the bog in order that his sacrifice need not be in vain. In this new evaluation of bog bodies and bog things, Melanie Giles argues that they form part of an exchange of substances and vitalities which must be situated in the lives of communities in prehistory. In order to do so, she maintains that we must see through the pejorative attitudes of centuries of landscape travellers, ‘improvers’, and drainers to the rich world of boglands in the past. This re-enchantment through archaeology, she contends, is one of the fundamental ways in which we can create productive new relations with peatlands as part of our global response to the climate crises.

Please be advised that the keynote lecture will feature images of non-skeletal human remains.

Dr Giles is a Senior Lecturer in Archaeology, University of Manchester, and pre-eminent scholar on Iron Age Britain.
