TII announces Heritage Week 2016 programme
Saturday – August 20th
Cork – Cork Public Museum
Food and eating in Irish Prehistory
Find out how archaeologists investigate life in prehistoric Ireland through the analysis of pollen grains, animal bones and cereal remains recovered from archaeological digs, and the study of artefacts connected with food production and consumption. Try your hand at identifying the bones of prehistoric animals and the remains of ancient crops in a ‘hands on’ session and have a go at grinding grain on a prehistoric hand mill. There will be a butter churning demonstration and the opportunity to try the results with some prehistoric-style bread. This will also be a last chance to see a hand-crafted replica of a mysterious Iron Age wooden artefact, to ponder its possible function and significance to prehistoric people. There will be a prize for the best suggestion! Presented by the Heritage Council INSTAR funded project 'Seeing Beyond the Site - landscape and settlement in later prehistoric Ireland'.
Time: 11:00 to 15:00
Organised by the Seeing Beyond the Site project, Department of Archaeology, University College Cork, in collaboration with Cork Public Museum and Cork Butter Museum.
