The National Directorate of Fire and Emergency Planning Crisis Management Team held a virtual Met Éireann co-ordination meeting today at 12.00 with Met Éireann, the local authorities, the Principal Response Agencies, key Departments and responding national organisations.

A deepening Atlantic depression (Storm Betty) will approach Ireland on Friday (18th August). Storm Betty will bring very strong winds with heavy rain or showers across Ireland through Friday evening and night and for a time on Saturday (19th August). Winds will be strongest in Southern coastal and midland counties with severe or damaging gusts possible. Heavy rain or showers will also bring the possibility of localised flooding. There will also be high waves at sea and a possibility of coastal flooding, especially on the south and east coasts.  All Government Departments and their agencies have been asked to utilise their online presence to relay public safety information during this time.

Orange wind Warning for Carlow, Cork, Kilkenny Tipperary, Waterford, Wexford and Wicklow for Friday in effect from 21:00-03:00.
Late this evening and tonight, Storm Betty will bring south to southwest gales with severe gusts of up to 130 km/hr. Spells of heavy rain and possible coastal flooding. Status Orange rainfall warning being issued for some southern counties as ~ 50-60mm of rain is possible locally higher on mountains. Potential Impacts:
  • Structural damage
  • Falling trees
  • Travel disruption
  • Power outages
  • Localised flooding
  • Wave overtopping
Orange Rainfall Warning Carlow, Cork, Kilkenny, Tipperary, Waterford, Wexford, and Wicklow in effect on Friday from 13:00-23:00.
Heavy rain with thundery downpours on Friday and Friday night and combined with very strong winds on coasts at times.
Potential Impacts:
  • Localised flooding
  • Difficult travelling conditions
  • Wave overtopping on coasts
Status Orange - Storm warning from Wicklow Head to Hook Head to Mizen Head and on the Irish Sea South of Anglesey in effect from Friday 22:00 – 04:00 Saturday.
Southeast winds, veering southwest will reach storm force 10 for a time on Irish coastal waters from Wicklow Head to Hook Head to Mizen Head and on the south Irish Sea.
 
Status Yellow Wind and Rainfall Warning has also been issued for Clare, Galway, Kerry, and Limerick for Friday in effect from 13:00-03:00 Saturday.

Status Yellow Wind and Rainfall Warning has also been issued for Cavan, Donegal, Dublin, Kildare, Leitrim, Longford, Louth, Mayo, Meath, Monaghan, Roscommon, Sligo, and Westmeath, in effect Friday 15:00 – Saturday 06:00.
