Light Rail and Metro
Following the merger of the National Roads Authority and the Railway Procurement Agency, the Roads Act of 2015 added the remit of securing the provision of, or providing, such light railway (such as Luas) and metro railway infrastructure as may be determined by the NTA. The NTA has the statutory function of providing metro and light railway infrastructure and is the Approving Authority for public transport infrastructure and services.
TII is committed to sustainability, improving climate resilience, and delivering Ireland’s aim of becoming carbon neutral by 2050. Luas won the Green Transport Award at the Green awards 2018, which recognized its efforts in sustainability and evidence that the system is considered exemplary. Luas supports Ireland’s Climate Action Plan and the natural environment.
Reducing Carbon from Transport Infrastructure
- Retrofitting of LED lights in depots to reduce energy consumption.
- Commencing retrofitting LED's on tram stops/ car parks this year.
Reducing Carbon from Transport Operations
- Fully electrified, Luas produces zero emissions at street level.
- Electricity used to power the Luas is from 100% certified renewable energy.
Reducing Carbon from Transport Users
If all the Luas journeys in 2022 had been made by car, more than 35,000 extra daily car journeys would have been made on Dublin's roads, increasing CO2 emissions by around 15,000 tonnes over the year.

Luas Operations
Dublin's Light Rail Transit system is called the Luas. It has carried over 13 million passengers since launching in 2004. Since its inception, Luas proved to be an instant success followed by steady and sustained growth.
