Road Safety
Road Safety Objectives
TII is committed to the twin objectives of providing safe and efficient national roads. Improved roads and the elimination of traffic congestion locations contribute to a more efficient transport system. Education, enforcement and engineering are recognised in the Road Safety Strategy (2013-2020) as three essential factors for reducing road collisions and fatalities. TII’s endeavour to provide a safer network of national roads is mainly focused on Engineering.
The safety of the national road network continues to be improved by TII through the construction of motorways and dual carriageways, which have lower collision rates than the sections of two-lane national road they replace. TII also implements safety schemes to mitigate safety issues on existing national roads.
Role of TII Road Safety
- Identifying safety issues by proactive and reactive analysis
- Funding safety improvement schemes through Local Authorities (Action 2 of RSS)
- Prioritising Minor Schemes based on safety ranking
- Overseeing Road Safety Audit Team approvals and training
- Other: Data Analysis, Road Safety Impact Assessments, Road Works Portal, Geometric Standards, Research, training

Road Infrastructure Safety Management ('RISM')
The EU Directive on Road Infrastructure Safety Management (EU RISM) was transposed into Irish Law through S.I No. 472 of 2011. EU RISM provides a system for managing the safety of the national road network. Much of the work of the TII Safety Section involves the implementation of EU RISM requirements

TII Safety Training
TII, in collaboration with ATU Sligo, has developed an educational programme in Road Safety Auditing and Engineering. This programme meets the academic requirements with the EU Road Infrastructure Safety Management Directive. Learn more about this initiative and explore additional training materials.

Urban Renewal
Learn how we improve road safety in towns and villages through traffic calming and design enhancements.

TII Safety Research
In addition to ongoing internal research, TII Safety actively participates in transnational road safety research programmes. Collaboration with road authorities and road safety research groups outside of Ireland allows for a transfer of knowledge, experience and ideas that are beneficial to the work of TII Safety and the wider strategic objectives of the organisation.
