Minister for Transport Darragh O’Brien, Minister of State with responsibility for International and Road Transport, Logistics, Rail and Ports, Seán Canney and Minister of State with responsibility for Rural Transport Jerry Buttimer have announced €360 million in Government funding for Active Travel and Greenways in 2026. This investment is dedicated to the development of walking and cycling projects that offer safe, sustainable and healthy transport options to communities around the country.

TII welcomes the Government's “Accelerated Delivery Action Plan”

As a transportation infrastructure delivery agency, TII welcomes the Government's “Accelerated Delivery Action Plan”. TII is one of the delivery agencies that provided a redeployed expert to DPER ensuring TII’s experience has fed into this important work. This action plan will remove obstacles and reduce bureaucracy that delay the country’s ability to provide needed improvements and projects across the National Roads Network, the Luas Network, Active Travel/Greenways and MetroLink, as well as assist in decarbonising transportation by expanding the EV recharging infrastructure network across all National Roads under the ZEVI programme.

TII Publishes First-Ever Network-Wide Road Safety Ratings for Ireland’s National Primary Roads

Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) has published its first ever Network-Wide Road Safety Assessment (NWA), marking a new milestone in Ireland’s commitment to safer roads. This safety rating system evaluates approximately 2500km of the national primary road network by combining both historical collision data and data from current proactive infrastructure inspections. This action is a requirement under the EU Road Infrastructure Safety Management (RISM) Directive. The Directive mandates safety classification for major road networks across Europe.

Minister O'Brien secures Cabinet approval for €24.3 billion Sectoral Investment Plan for Transport 2026-2030

Minister for Transport Darragh O’Brien today secured Cabinet approval for the Sectoral Investment Plan for Transport under the recent National Development Plan (NDP) Review. The NDP Review is the largest and most significant capital injection in our economy in the history of the State, supporting comprehensive upgrading of our water, energy and transport infrastructure to support all other necessary economic development.

I am joined by Geraldine Fitzpatrick, Head of Roads and Greenways Capital Programme, Sean Sweeney, Programme Director Metrolink, and Paolo Carbone, Head of Light Rail Capital Programme. TII’s remit in relation to National Roads as set out in the Roads Act 1993 is to secure the provision of a safe and efficient network of national roads having regard to the needs of all users. National Roads comprise 5,400 kilometres of Motorways, National Primaries, and National Secondaries. National Roads make up approximately 5% of the total length of public roads, yet National Roads carry some 45% of all vehicle kilometres. TII is the Approving Authority for National Roads projects.

Introduction Thank you for the opportunity to appear before you today, to discuss TII’s role in delivering active travel and greenway projects. I am joined by my colleagues Geraldine Fitzpatrick, TII’s Head of Roads and Greenways Capital Programme and Mary Flynn, Regional Manager. TII’s role in delivering transport infrastructure is set out in the duties and functions assigned to TII through legislation. The National Roads Authority (NRA), operating as Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) since 2015, was established under the Roads Act 1993. It is the general duty of TII to secure the provision of a safe and efficient network of national roads having regard to the needs of all users. Under the Infrastructure Guidelines, TII is the Approving Authority for national road projects and works in partnership with Local Authorities, which are the road authorities for all roads, including national roads.

TII Gender Pay Gap Report 2025

Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) is required to report on its gender pay gap under Ireland’s Gender Pay Gap Information Act 2021, which mandates that public sector bodies with over 250 employees disclose the difference in average earnings between male and female staff. This transparency aims to highlight pay disparities, promote accountability, and encourage progress toward gender equality in the workplace. By publishing this data, TII contributes to a broader national effort to identify and address systemic issues affecting pay equity.

Transport Minister and Government Agencies Welcome MetroLink Railway Order Nation-Building MetroLink to Transform Dublin and Ireland

The decision of An Coimisiún Pleanála to grant approval for the MetroLink Railway Order has been warmly welcomed by Minister for Transport Darragh O’Brien, National Transport Authority (NTA) Interim CEO Hugh Creegan, Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) CEO Lorcan O’Connor, and MetroLink Programme Director Seán Sweeney. This planning permission marks a major milestone towards delivering MetroLink, a critical nation-building project for Ireland’s future. The decision facilitates MetroLink proceeding to procurement and construction in the coming years.

A planning application for the N/M20 Cork to Limerick Project is programmed to be submitted to An Bord Pleanála next year, subject to approval of the project’s Business Case which will be presented to Government later this year.

Interactive mapping available from today’s update on the project website, www.corklimerick.ie, presents the developing design which includes specific information on the Indicative Development Boundaries, mainline, junctions and side road design, layouts for seven Transport Hubs and a dedicated Freight Hub, amongst many other design details and construction information. Public display events will be held between 12pm and 8pm in Charleville (June17th), Adare (June 18th) and Mallow (June 19th).
