ZEVI TII EV Recharging Infrastructure LDV En-Route Grant Schemes

We are working with partner Zero Emission Vehicles Ireland (ZEVI), to accelerate the delivery of Electric Vehicle (EV) recharging infrastructure across Ireland's National Road Network by incentivising private sector involvement.

LDV Grant Scheme Phase 3

A new Scheme to support the roll out of high-power EV recharging infrastructure launched on February 28th 2025 and is now open for applications.

This third grant scheme follows on from the Phase 1 scheme in early 2024 which focused on the motorways (approximately 1,000km) and the Phase 2 Scheme launched in October 2024 focusing on national single carriageway roads (approximately 1,200km).

In line with the National Road Network EV Charging Plan, ZEVI and TII have launched Phase 3 of grant funding, focusing on approximately 3,000km of the remaining primary and secondary roads on the National Road Network outside of the TEN-T Network. The objective is to support the roll out of EV recharging infrastructure at regular intervals across the relevant parts of the road network – see the indicative map below for more information on the included roads

ZEVI TII EV Recharging Infrastructure LDV National Road Grant Scheme

Key Points on the Scheme are:

  • The Scheme will target publicly accessible facilities within 3km driving distance of the Scheme roads.
  • The Scheme may be of interest to petrol / service station operators, car park owners, hotels, supermarkets / retail outlets, and anyone with a publicly accessible site.
  • Significant funding of up to 70% of eligible costs, to a maximum permissible of €300k, is available to support the roll out of en-route recharging pools that meet or exceed the minimum requirements.
  • The application window runs from February 28th, 2025, to April 16th, 2025.
  • Minimum recharging requirements are a recharging pool size of a minimum of 100kW backed by a minimum grid capacity of 100kVA, located at appropriate distances across the Scheme roads. The grant-aided infrastructure to be in place by the 31st March 2026.
  • Full details of the Invitation to Apply and the competition process are available on the eTenders website www.etenders.gov.ie. Applications are to be submitted via an online form

Phase 1, Round 2

The first ZEVI EV Recharging Infrastructure LDV National Road Grant Scheme was launched in early 2024. In July 2024 the locations of 17 new high-powered recharging pools to be rolled out under this scheme were announced.

In November 2024 a second round of this scheme was launched to encourage the provision of recharging infrastructure in specific areas (sub-zones) where it was not possible to award grants in the initial round.

  • Locations of the sub-zones can be found in the map here.
  • More information can be found in the scheme brochure here.

This Scheme is now closed to applications and evaluation is underway. Scheme results will be published when the process concludes.

Phase 2

Launched in October 2024 in collaboration with the Department of Transport and Zero Emission Vehicles Ireland (ZEVI), this grant scheme represents the second phase in TII’s programme to accelerate the development of Electric Vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure across Ireland's National Road Network.

The ZEVI TII EV Recharging Infrastructure Light Duty Vehicle (LDV) National Road Grant Scheme Phase 2 focuses on 1200km+ of national single carriageway roads, aiming to support the roll out of a minimum of 300kW of High-power EV recharging infrastructure at regular intervals along the National Road Network. This initiative offers a competitive opportunity for private sector participation, promoting innovation and enhancing efficiency in the development of EV recharging infrastructure.

Details

  • The scheme targets petrol / service station operators, car park owners, hotels, supermarkets / retail outlets, and anyone with a publicly accessible site within 3km driving distance of the Scheme roads.
  • The initiative takes the form of a competitive grant process and will be awarded under EU De Minimis State Aid funding rules.
  • This grant aid will support the capital costs of installing the new recharging infrastructure, funding of up to 70% of eligible costs, to a maximum permissible level of €300k.
  • Eligible costs under this scheme include construction, installation, upgrade, or extension of recharging infrastructure, as well as associated civil engineering works and Local Authority development consent fees.
  • More information, can be found in the scheme brochure.
  • The new recharging infrastructure funded under this scheme is targeted to be operational and available for public use by December 2025.

The Scheme is now closed to applications and evaluation is underway. Scheme results will be published when the process concludes.

Phase 1

The first ZEVI EV Recharging Infrastructure LDV National Road Grant Scheme was launched by TII and ZEVI in February 2024. In July 2024 the Minister for Transport Eamon Ryan announced the locations of 17 new high-powered recharging pools to be rolled out under this scheme on the National Road Network.

A total of 131 high-powered recharging points will be built across 17 recharging pools providing an additional 24,260 kilowatts (24 megawatts) recharging capacity.

Each of these recharging pools provides banks of Fast and Ultra-Fast recharging points, so that people can charge their EVs quickly. The infrastructure will be built by private business, grant aided by the Department of Transport. The successful applicants were:
