VERKKO

What is VERKKO?

European network for safer, greener, and digital traffic management, intermodal freight,  and cross-border mobility improvements along the TEN-T corridors.

VERKKO is a collaborative European initiative bringing together 40 partners from 12 countries to create a harmonized network of Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) and Cooperative ITS (C-ITS) along major TEN-T corridors. The consortium unites to deliver a European network for safer, greener, and enhanced digital traffic management, intermodal freight, and cross-border mobility along the TEN-T corridors

The project aims to strengthen cross-border synergies and close gaps in C-ITS continuity, particularly in northern Europe. VERKKO will enable digital access to critical road, travel, and traffic data and deliver safety-related services to end users, building on NAPCORE and aligning with the new EU Directive (2023/2661) and C-Roads specifications

Projects

TII C-ITS

Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) is piloting Cooperative Intelligent Transport Systems (C-ITS) services to enhance road safety, traffic efficiency, and environmental benefits. The pilot covers the TEN-T comprehensive roads network and evaluates vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) and vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) services, such as Hazard Location Notifications, Road Works Warnings, and In-Vehicle Signage. It employs a hybrid communication approach using WiFi (ITS-G5) and standard cellular networks. The project is co-financed by the EU Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) with a budget of €10.2M. Wrong Way Driver (WWD)

The second project tackles the dangerous potential of wrong-way driving. Through the installation of cutting-edge detection and verification systems, TII will deploy sensors, or other technologies such as CCTV at up to 30 critical locations, including motorway junctions and slip roads. These systems will not only identify and verify wrong-way drivers but also enhance TII’s existing journey time management and traffic data collection systems, adding an extra layer of intelligence and maximising use of Ireland’s road infrastructure. This proactive approach will significantly enhance road safety and reduce the risk of severe accidents.

Weigh-In-Motion (WIM)

This task involves the deployment of Weigh-in-Motion (WIM) sensors at ten strategic sites on Ireland’s national road network. Managed by Transport Infrastructure Ireland, this project will deliver high quality data on the weights of vehicles operating on the national road network, enabling better informed decisions for road maintenance and operations. By sharing this data internally and with relevant authorities, the initiative will also help address issues of vehicle overloading, improving safety and sustainability across the network.
