Official opening of third section of South Kerry Greenway

The third section of the South Kerry Greenway, which includes a 100-metre elevated boardwalk, has been opened to the public.  This section extends from the new boardwalk at Mountain Stage to Griffin's Cottage at Killkeehagh near the N70 road, bringing the total accessible distance from the Glenbeigh Trailhead to 6.2km.

The greenway is designed to be a 27km stretch between Glenbeigh and Cahersiveen, with two-thirds of the distance completed by the end of 2027.

The South Kerry Greenway follows the corridor of the former Killorglin–Valentia Harbour railway line, once the most westerly railway in Europe. Operating from 1893 to 1960, the line connected stations in Killorglin, Glenbeigh, Kells, Cahersiveen and Valentia Harbour—the westernmost terminus. Known for its dramatic, cliff-hugging route and Atlantic vistas, the line made its final journey on 30 January 1960, leaving behind iconic structures such as the Gleesk Viaduct.

Speaking at the official opening on Monday, 6 July during his visit to Kerry, Minister of Transport Darragh O’Brien said: ‘I am delighted to be in County Kerry today for the formal opening of several schemes that will improve transport infrastructure for those living in and visiting this beautiful county. My department is committed to funding improvements to both active travel infrastructure and the roads network across the southwest."

TII working with Kerry County Council from funding provided by the Department of Transport assisted in the delivery of South Kerry Greenway. Paul Moran TII’s Manager Southwest Region stated, “The opening of the South Kerry Greenway is more than a new route through a remarkable landscape—it’s an investment in local transport, sustainable tourism, and highlights the connection that can be enhanced by a Greenway between people and place.”
